The following is the story of my young life as I remember it. (I did my best to make this a spoiler-free review.) That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo.įirst-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the Summer Solstice celebration. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naïve to the twisted motives of others. Ava-in all other ways a normal girl-is born with the wings of a bird. Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.įoolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Writing this book took a hundred years longer and was a thousand times harder than I thought it would be. I hope they act as a mirror and inspire personal reflection so you can see the immense value of the friends you have been gifted. My hope is that through these stories you may see your own. I share with you my personal stories of friendships through love and murder, laughter and turmoil, homelessness and hope, brotherhood and brawls, wisdom and redemption and the greatest treasures known to man. I wrote The Opposite of Poverty Is Friendship hoping it would do exactly what it seems to be doing: giving people a moment to pause and reflect on the blessings of their wonderful friendships, and to reach out to let friends know how much we really appreciate having them in our lives. We are blind to what is in front of us and only notice it when it's gone. Just like the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the friends we have, we take for granted the things in life that sustain us most. This is precisely why I knew I had to write it and why I'm so happy you are reading it. The biggest fans of this book now were not initially excited when I first told them I was going to write a book about friendship. Friends are God's way of taking care of us. Renni's desk is empty, but Renni still knows their secrets is still pulling their strings. It’s written by the type of woman who, if she grew up in the American South, could effortlessly deploy a “bless your heart” without the recipient knowing if they should be taking offense. What I love about how this book reads is that you feel you’re having a cuppa with a sassy aunt who has seen it all, done it all, but still puts on a full face of makeup everyday because she’s got standards, deary. With its passionate knowledge of people and places in Hawaii far off the tourist track, HONOLULU is another spellbinding story of the triumphs and sacrifices of the human spirit from the author of the reading group favorite MOLOKA'I.
